Improving on Sunday’s $39.3 million weekend estimate, Universal’s Denzel Washington-Ryan Reynolds actioner “Safe House” settled in with a revised $40.2 million opening.
“Safe House” still came in at No. 2 behind Sony-Screen Gem’s “The Vow,” which won domestic bragging rights with $41.2 million vs. its estimated $41.7 million.
Revised gross for “Safe House” sets a new weekend record, marking the first time two films launched north of $40 million in January or February.
The top pair’s hearty perfs, along with a stellar $27.3 million debut for Warner Bros.-New Line’s “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” lifted overall weekend totals to $191.9 million — the highest collective tally for a non-holiday frame earned this early in the calendar year.
Fox’s 3D re-issue of “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” came in slightly lower than its estimated $23 million, debuting to a revised $22.5 million three-day gross.
