Alcon acquires ‘Icons’

Film unit to produce the project with Erwin Stoff

Aiming to start a young-adult franchise, Alcon Entertainment has acquired screen rights to “Icons,” the forthcoming futuristic novel from Margaret Stohl, and will produce the feature adaptation with Erwin Stoff.

Project reteams Alcon, Stohl and Stoff on the heels of wrapping production on an adaptation of fantasy-romancer “Beautiful Creatures.” Stoff is a producer and Stohl is co-author of the original novel.

Stoff, who brought in “Icons,” is producing with Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove; Molly Smith exec produces.

“Icons,” which is Stohl’s debut solo novel, begins after an alien race has decimated Earth — leaving the fate of the planet with four children born immune to the aliens’ power. “Icons” is the first in a planned series at Little, Brown.

Stoff recently produced “Water for Elephants” and is currently producing “All You Need Is Kill,” starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt for Warner Bros.

Stoff and Smith are producers on “Beautiful Creatures,” the screen adaptation of the first in the series of four books written by Stohl and co-author Kami Garcia. Others in the series, published by Little, Brown, includes “Beautiful Darkness,” “Beautiful Chaos” and the upcoming final installment, “Beautiful Redemption.”

“Beautiful Creatures” has been set for release by Warner Bros. on Feb. 13. Pic stars Emma Thompson, Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum, Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert.

“We are thrilled with our involvement in ‘Beautiful Creatures’ and the franchise it promises,” Johnson and Kosove said. “Once we learned of Margaret’s new venture, we jumped at the chance to continue our partnership with her and this amazing series of books.”

Alcon in-house counsel David Fierson handled the deal. Deal with Alcon was brokered by CAA and Sarah Burnes of The Gernert Company
