Variety Studio launches at TIFF

Depp, McGregor, Watts, Farrrell among celebs interviewed

The Variety Studio launched its third installment at TIFF with back-to-back interviews with some of the festival’s most buzzed about films and filmmakers.

Among those who stopped in to talk to Variety’s awards editors and critics at the Studio’s Holt Renfrew locale were Johnny Depp; “The Impossible’s'” Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts; Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell and Colin Farrell (“Seven Psychopaths”); “Argo’s” Tate Donovon; and “Fitzgerald Family Christmas” filmmaker/actor Ed Burns.

Depp, who is in town to promote doc “West of Memphis,” joined Damien Echols, one of the West Memphis Three who was recently released from prison.

“On a very human level, when you are witness to such grave injustice, you either run toward the frontlines to do what you can do, if anything, or you stand by and watch and let it all happen … and there was just no way, as a man, to just stand by and let this happen.”
