Strand signs on for Gallic pics

Film outfit grabs '17 Girls,' 'Impardonnables'

L.A.-based outfit Strand Releasing has grabbed a pair of Gallic arthouse pics for U.S. distribution: Cesar-nommed “17 Girls,” Delphine and Muriel Coulin’s directorial debut repped by Paris-based Films Distribution; and French vet Andre Techine’s “Impardonnables” (Unforgivable) sold by TF1 Intl.

“Unforgivable” is a drama centering on a writer’s daughter who goes missing on the island of Sant Erasmo. Pic, which premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, was produced by Said Ben Said’s SBS Films. It was penned by Techine and Mehdi Ben Attia, adapted from Philippe Djian’s novel.

A dramedy based in Brittany, “17 Girls” is based on the true story of a group of American high school girls who decided to get pregnant at the same time. Pic has been selected at numerous international fests since premiering at Cannes’ Critics Week to warm reviews, and earned a Cesar nomination for best first film. Pic was produced by Denis Freyd at Archipel 35.

Strand Releasing has picked up films by French auteurs including Gaspar Noe, Jacques Audiard, Benoit Jacquot and Francois Ozon.

Strand will host U.S. premieres of “Unforgivable” and “17 Girls” at Unifrance’s N.Y. Rendez-Vous.
