‘Sleep Alone,’ ‘Inori’ top Morelia

'I Hate Love,' 'Tintico' also earn kudos at Mexican fest

MORELIA, Mexico

Natalia Beristain’s first feature “I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone” (No quiero dormir sola) claimed the jury prize for film Saturday at the close of the 10th Morelia Film Festival with the docu jury handing a win to helmer Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio for “Inori.”

Beristain is a grad of Mexico’s Centro de Capacitacion Cinematografica. Pic turns on the closing of a generational gap between twenty-something Amada (Mariana Gaja) and her aging grandmother, played by Adriana Roel, a star from Mexico’s Golden Age making a return to the bigscreen.

Gonzalez-Rubio’s “Inori” looks at life in remote areas high in the mountains of Japan’s Nara Prefecture in a graying village where the young have become scarce. His “Alamar” won for feature in 2009.

Both films were awarded national distribution from Canana Films’ indie distrib unit.

The public prize went to star-crossed teen romance “I Hate Love” by Humberto Hinojosa, who first gained attention in Guadalajara with his debut feature “Black Sheep” (Oveja negra) in 2009. Tropical-music infused “Tintico’s Afternoons” (Las tardes de Tintico) from Alejandro Garcia Caballero took the top animated short prize, while the jury awarded Izabel Acevedo for her fiction short “To Put Together a Helicopter” (Para armar un helicopter).

Both shorts are automatically thrown into consideration for Oscar contention in those categories.
