Record numbers for Berlin fest

250,000 tickets sold through its halfway point

With 250,000 tickets sold through its halfway point, the Berlinale is on track to achieve a significant attendance jump this year.

The fest saw a total 300,000 admissions in 2011 and with five days still to go, ticket sales this year look certain to set new records.

The Berlinale this year added a new venue, the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, on the west side.

The European Film Market also reported a decisive increase in participants and films.

More than 400 market exhibitors are flogging films at the Martin Gropius Bau exhibition hall and the Marriott Hotel. More than 1,000 industry reps and festgoers have attended the market and events such as the EFM Industry Debates.

“The audience is pouring into cinemas and celebrating world stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Angelina Jolie, Isabelle Huppert and Christian Bale,” said Berlinale topper Dieter Kosslick. “People love the Berlinale — no matter how cold or icy it happens to be in Berlin.”

On Tuesday the fest honored Meryl Streep with a Golden Bear for lifetime achievement.
