France's 'Tomboy' scoops public nod and actress in Argentine event

Israel’s “Policeman” locked up the top prize at the 14th Buenos Aires Intl. Festival of Independent Film, which wrapped Sunday.

The story of a clash between anti-terrorist forces and young rebels also won director for Nadav Lapid in the 15-title international competition.

The other big winner at Argentina’s busiest film fest was France’s “Tomboy.” Directed by Celine Sciamma, the tale of a young girl who changes her identity picked up actress for Zoe Heran and the public nod.

Father-son story “La arana vampiro” (The Vampire Spider) won best Argentine film in the international competition, and actor for Martin Piroyansky (“XXY”).

The jury handed out a special price to another Argentine entry: Maximiliano Schonfeld’s farm drama “Germania.”

In the 14-strong competition for Argentine features, Gaston Solnicki’s family expose “Papirosen” went home with film, while Luis Ortega took director for street tale “Dromomanos” (Roamers).

“La chica del sur” (The Girl From the South), Jose Luis Garcia’s film about South Korean peace activist Im Su-kyong, won a jury special mention and the public’s vote, while cinematography went to Roman Cardenas for his work in Fernando Gatti’s coming-of-age drama “Igual si llueve.”

At the 9th Buenos Aires Lab, one of the world’s biggest markets for Europeans to find Latin American co-production projects, Matias Pineiro went away with the top co-production prize for “Viola,” while Bolivian Diego Mondaca scooped two awards for “Agua,” a look at the 1932-35 Chaco War between Bolivia and Paraguay.
