Music Box picks up Baker’s ‘Starlet’

Film stars Dree Hemingway

Music Box Films has acquired North American rights to Sean Baker’s “Starlet,” starring Dree Hemingway, great granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway and daughter of Mariel Hemingway.

Paris-based Rezo has acquired international sales rights

Music Box plans a fall release for “Starlet,” which premiered in competition at the SXSW Film Festival and received a special SXSW jury recognition for Besedka Johnson, an 85-year-old actress who makes her bigscreen debut.

Pic was produced by Blake Ashman-Kipervaser, Kevin Chinoy, Francesca Silvestri, Patrick Cunningham and Chris Maybach. Ted Hope, Shih-Ching Tsou, Saerom Kim, Saemi Kim, Giancarlo Canavesio and Sol Tryon exec produce.

“Starlet” explores the unlikely cross-generational friendship between a 21 year old and an elderly woman after the younger woman uncovers a hidden stash of money inside a relic from the elderly woman’s past.

Per Sebastien Chesneau, Rezo’s international sales topper, there is an international market for this kind of film, while in France, ” ‘Starlet’ will only require decent P&A to lure the young adult crowd. Plus, it can easily pull some TV sales.”

Rezo has also closed key territory sales on another daring U.S. film : Stephen Elliott’s James Franco-starrer “Cherry,” which opened at Berlin in the Panorama Special section.

John Hopewell and Elsa Keslassy contributed to this report.
