Kino buys Auteuil pic

Shingle gets U.S. rights to thesp's directorial debut

Kino Lorber has picked up all U.S. rights to vet thesp Daniel Auteuil’s directorial debut “The Well-Digger’s Daughter” (La Fille du puisatier), a remake of Marcel Pagnol’s 1940 classic film.

Pic toplines Auteuil, up-and-comer Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Sabine Azema and Nicolas Duvauchelle.

Pic has been selected to unspool at the New York Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in March. Darroussin will attend the event.

Kino Lorber will release the film in June at New York’s Lincoln Plaza Cinemas and will expand the theatrical rollout to other major markets over the summer. VOD and homevid releases will follow later in the year.

Set on the eve of WWII in Southern France, the melodrama centers on a well digger and his 18-year-old daughter. She falls in love and has a child with an upper-class young pilot who’s been sent off to war.

Auteuil broke through more than 25 years ago in Claude Berri’s “Jean de Florette” and “Manon of the Spring,” both adapted from Pagnol.

The thesp-helmer is also on board to direct the remake of Pagnol’s 1930s trilogy “Marius,” “Fanny” and “Cesar.” Pics will be produced by Alain Sarde’s AS Films and Jerome Seydoux’s Pathe, who last teamed on “The Well-Digger’s Daughter.”

Deal was negotiated between Kino Lorber’s CEO Richard Lorber and Pathe’s exec VP of international sales, Muriel Sauzay.
