Bruno Wu’s Seven Stars Film Studios has agreed to finance John Woo’s remake of “The Killer” from Woo and Terence Chang’s Lion Rock Prods.
English-language retelling of Woo’s 1989 action film will be directed by John H. Lee from a script by Josh Campbell. Sarah Yan Li will co-star in the thriller.
Woo and Chang will produce alongside Lion Rock’s Lori Tilkin, who will executive produce. Filming begins in the fourth quarter in Toronto.
Seven Stars’ CEO Fred Milstein closed the deal prior to Cannes.
Milstein came onboard in early May as prexy of Chinese entrepreneur Wu’s Harvest Seven Stars Entertainment.
Seven Stars announced April 30 that it was linking with the Tianjin city government to build Chinawood, a $1.27 billion film and media hub that will sprawl over 8.6 million square feet. Project is aimed at luring U.S. and other foreign productions and will provide a hub for co-productions, which are exempt from Chinese import quotas.
Wu has teamed with Jake Eberts and Justin Lin on projects this year after launching the $800 million private equity-fueled Harvest Seven Stars Media Fund in February.
