Brazilian film agency Cinema do Brasil has renewed its annual $250,000 Distribution Support prints and advertising fund for a fourth year.
The initiative, a first for Latin America, kicked off Monday. It offers foreign distributors up to $25,000 toward P&A on a Brazilian release. In the past, distributors received $25,000 per movie, although support for releases in smaller countries may be less this year, since costs vary from territory to territory, CDB director general Andre Sturm said Monday at the European Film Market.
The call for applications runs through June 3, allowing distributors and sales agents to apply for films screened or presented as projects at the Berlin and Cannes festivals.
To be eligible, distributors must commit to a minimum theatrical run of five cities and four weeks at one theater and put up matching P&A funds.
More than 30 films and distributors have received grants since the initiative launched in 2009, including “Elite Squad 2,” distributed in Poland by Gremi Film; “The Famous and the Dead,” which Alambique released in Portugal; and “Estomago,” which Bodega Films opened in France.
An expected increase in the number of grants in 2012 reflects demand, Sturm said.
“In the past, you sometimes had Brazilian films at major festivals. Now there is a constant presence,” Sturm added.
Brazilian films at the Berlinale include Miguel Gomes’ competition player “Tabu,” Cao Hamburger’s “Xingu” and Claudia Priscilla and Kiko Goifman’s “Look at Me Again” in Panorama.
