‘Beautiful’ buy for British Entertainment

Teenage witch pic casts spell on Blighty buyers

Blighty’s Entertainment Film Distributors has pre-bought U.K. rights for mystical teenage witch pic “Beautiful Creatures.”

Pic, which is produced by Alcon Entertainment and being shopped at the European Film Market by Summit Intl., has already sold to Germany’s Concorde Film on Friday.

A number of British buyers were said to be vying for the project, including Entertainment One.

Pic, based on the bestselling tome by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, toplines Emma Thompson, Viola Davis and newcomers Jack O’Connell and Alice Englert.

“Creatures” is currently in pre-production and is adapted and helmed by Richard Lagravenese, whose previous directing credits include “P.S. I Love You” and “Freedom Writers” and scribe credits include “Water for Elephants” and “The Bridges of Madison County.”

Warner Bros. will release the teen gothic romance domestically through its financing and distribution agreement with Alcon.

Story focuses on a small-town teenage boy Ethan, who dreams of escaping his ordinary life until the day he meets Lena, a young witch. The two fall in love but as her 16th birthday approaches, she fears for Ethan’s safety within her life and chooses to erase their love from his memory although the connection between the two remains inescapable.

Erwin Stoff, Andrew A. Kosove, Broderick Johnson and Molly Smith produce.

Garcia and Stohl’s “Beautiful” series so far contains four books and its first installment was published in 2009.
