Arab spring in Sweden

Fest Traveler: Goteburg Film Festival

Goteborg may be a long way from Tunis, Cairo or Damascus, but its focus this year on Arabic-language filmmaking is timely.

Conceived during last year’s fest — when the first Arab Spring revolts were just beginning — the fest’s Arab focus includes movies that reflect everyday lives and provide a background to the political currents in the region.

“We will be looking at films made both before, during and after the revolutions, and there will be a seminar on the role that TV and the Internet have played,” says artistic director Marit Kapla.

Films include Tunisia’s “Rouge Parole,” an account of the revolution in that country directed by Elyes Baccar; and “No More Fear,” by Murad Ben Cheikh, another take on those events.

Other fest events include master classes by directors such as Alexander Payne, Giorgos Lanthimos, Lone Scherfig and Jessica Hausner (who is jury chairman for the Nordic Award).

Gala movies include “The Descendants,” “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” “The Artist,” “Carnage,” “W.E.,” “Trishna” and “Dark Horse.”

Guests this year also include Michael Winterbottom, Eva Ionesco and David Hare.
