Amelio sets ‘L’intrepido’

Chaplin-style laffer will look at Italian economy

Italo auteur Gianni Amelio is prepping “L’intrepido,” a light-hearted take on the country’s current economic crisis, starring local comic Antonio Albanese (“Whatsoeverly”).

Amelio is taking a different tack from the classic arthouse dramas he is known for, including “Lamerica,” “Stolen Children” and, more recently Albert Camus bio “The First Man.”

“Albanese and I have looked at lots of Charlie Chaplin movies together,” Amelio said. “I want this to be a film that is about our anxieties, but with a smile.”

Amelio penned the script with Italo scribe Davide Lantieri. Plan is to start shooting next spring in Italy.

Carlo Degli Esposti’s Palomar is producing with RAI Cinema on board.

Degli Esposti is negotiating co-productions with France and Germany at Venice.
