‘Ted’ battles ‘Brave’ at box office

MacFarlane pic tracking at mid-to-high $30 million range

The battle between animated bears comes to a head at the weekend’s domestic B.O., as Universal’s R-rated “Ted” competes for the weekend’s top spot with Disney-Pixar holdover “Brave.”

“Ted,” which features a Seth MacFarlane-voiced foul-mouthed teddy, could land in the mid-to-high $30 million range, while “Brave” — if it drops 45% from the pic’s $66.3 million debut last weekend — would earn around $36 million through Sunday.

Some bizzers anticipate a higher upside for “Ted” in the low-$40 million range, however.

Just as “Ted” should feature front-loaded male turnout on Friday (pic likely will have strong Saturday couples support), Warner Bros.’ R-rated stripper pic “Magic Mike” will earn the most this weekend on opening day, thanks to hyped female response. Advanced ticket sales for “Magic Mike” already are impressive; pic tallied $440,000 in midnight grosses by late morning today.

“Magic Mike” is expected to drop on Saturday, though bizzers can’t agree on how much. Tracking suggests the film will land in the mid-to-high teens, with a potential low-$20 million upside.

Also opening this weekend, Lionsgate’s “Madea’s Witness Protection” — the first summer bow for multi-hyphenate Tyler Perry — should gross similarly to “Magic Mike.” Disney’s family drama “People Like Us,” from DreamWorks, isn’t expected to hit north of $10 million.
