In its sixth week of release, docu “2016: Obama’s America,” which reached $2 million domestically through Aug. 19, has not only captured the attention of conservative auds, but also is aiming to make its case among liberals.
Randy Slaughter, co-founder of Rocky Mountain Pictures, which is handling U.S. distribution for “2016,” says the pic’s release pattern has been unusual.
“The individual theaters are calling the home offices of AMC or Regal to book the film. I’ve never seen this kind of demand,” he says.
On Aug. 24, Rocky Mountain expanded “2016” to more than 1,000 theaters, including left-leaning cities like San Francisco and Seattle — one of the widest location spreads for an independently distributed documentary. The distrib also opened the film in Southern California, in the Republican strongholds of Orange County, Simi Valley and Long Beach. The pic opened Aug. 24 in Century City.

The doc — from writer/co-directors John Sullivan and Dinesh D’Souza, who also penned the source book — led the nation’s Aug. 22 ticket sales, with 34%, according to ticketing site Fandango.com. What’s more, the pic should eclipse “Bully” ($3.5 million) to become the year’s highest-grossing documentary, excluding nature and concert docus.
“The plan was to find (regions) of the country (that) had a passion for the book and the film,” Slaughter says. “But the curiosity level has reached a point where the film just took off.”
