Warner Bros. kept the competition at bay — literally — with “The Dark Knight Rises” winning its fourth overseas frame Aug. 10-12, grossing $35.1 million for an international cume of $446.6 million, 28% better than its predecessor during a similar time frame, using 2008 exchange rates.
The holdover power from Batman has prevented similarly targeted pics like “Total Recall” and “The Bourne Legacy” from launching wide day-and-date. Sony initially bowed its “Recall” remake mostly in smaller Asian markets, before expanding the pic last weekend into 29 territories (including Japan, Mexico and Russia), where it grossed $18.9 million for the sesh, for an overseas cume of $44.1 million .
Universal, meanwhile, took a similar approach on “The Bourne Legacy,” launching the film in only 13 territories — mostly throughout Asia and Eastern Europe, earning $7.7 million (including promising starts in debut markets like the Philippines, where “Bourne” became U’s biggest opening ever).

“Dark Knight Rises” could wind up outpacing the middle Batpic worldwide: While “Rises” has earned $394 million domestically through Aug. 14, and is unlikely to catch “The Dark Knight’s” $533 million Stateside cume, the latest pic is only $25 million shy of surpassing the second installment internationally, with plenty more overseas Batcaves yet to explore. “Dark Knight Rises” bows in China on Aug. 27, followed two days later by Italy.
So far, the U.K. has been the top foreign market for the Batman finale, with $72.3 million; South Korea and Australia have contributed nearly $40 million each.
