‘Ice Age’ drifts to top of Friday B.O.

Pic tops domestic B.O. with $16.5 mil, on track for high-$40 mil weekend

As expected, the weekend’s only wide release — Fox’s “Ice Age: Continental Drift” — landed on top of the Friday box office with a serviceable $16.5 million.

The toon’s Friday figure puts the film on track for a weekend take in the high-$40 million range with a potential upside in the $50-millions, depending on just how big of an uptick film sees on Saturday. The estimated weekend three-day gross of “Continental Drift” would land the film between the franchise’s third and second installments: The most recent pic, “Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” snagged $66.7 million in six days of a midweek bow, with almost $42 mil coming off the weekend. “The Meltdown,” meanwhile, earned $68 million in three days.

“Continental Drift” will gross more than $250 mil through Sunday from international territories, with Mexico, France and Germany leading the way.

Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” held well on Friday, down only 50% from last week with $10.3 million. Pic’s domestic cume reached $176.2 million.

Seth McFarlane and Universal’s “Ted” also had a strong Friday, grabbing $6.9 million for an estimated $158.1 million in domestic dollars to date. U’s violent drug thriller “Savages” only brought in $2.7 million on Friday, down from last Friday’s $5.7 mil, for a drop of $52%.

Meanwhile, WB’s “Magic Mike” and Disney’s “Brave” grabbed $3.4 and $3.25 million heading into their third and fourth weeks respectively.
