“Super 8,” “Hugo” and “The Adventures of Tintin” took top honors Sunday at the Motion Picture Sound Editors 59th annual Golden Reel Awards, held at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles.
J.J. Abrams’ “Super 8” won for best sound editing: dialogue and ADR, while Martin Scorsese’s ode to filmmaking “Hugo” won a music sound editing award. Steven Spielberg’s motion-capture adventure “Tintin”
was also honored in the animated feature sound editing category.
Spielberg’s other big release this year, “War Horse,” won for editing of sound effects and foley.
Scorsese also saw two of his projects get honored. In addition to “Hugo’s” statuette, his HBO documentary “George Harrison: Living in the Material World” was recognized for best sound editing: sound effects, foley, dialogue, ADR and music in a feature documentary.
“The Muppets” won for music in a musical feature film, and “The Flowers of War” won for foreign-language film.
On the TV side, Showtime’s “Homeland” won for best longform dialogue and ADR, and AMC’s “The Walking Dead” won for longform sound effects and foley.
The MPSE which holds the Golden Reel Awards every year, is a non- profit honorary society made up of working foley artists and sound and music editors. A series of blue ribbon panels made up of volunteer MPSE voters determine the winners.
