Opting mostly for international themes, the PGA has unveiled five feature documentary nominees for the Producers Guild Awards.

Contenders for the 2013 docu prize are Aaron Yeger’s “A People Uncounted,” Dror Moreh’s “The Gatekeepers,” Jon Shenk’s “The Island President,” Marius Markevicius’ “The Other Dream Team” and Malik Bendjelloul’s “Searching for Sugar Man.”

Nominations for the PGA’s top feature award will be announced on Jan. 3 along with the nominated producers of the docs. The 24th edition of the PGA Awards is set for Jan. 26 at the Beverly Hilton.

The PGA tapped “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest” as winner of its documentary award last January.

“A People Uncounted” centers on the Roma (Gypsies) and their history; “The Gatekeepers” contains interviews with six former heads of Israel’s domestic secret service agency, the Shin Bet; “The Island President” centers on efforts of former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed to deal with climate change; “The Other Dream Team” follows the 1992 Lithuanian national basketball team; and “Searching for Sugar Man” details efforts by South African fans to uncover the truth about the rumored death of American musician Rodriguez.
