BATUMI, Georgia — Antti Jokinen’s “Purge” has been selected as Finland’s contender in the foreign-language film contest at the Oscars.
Chosen by a jury of Finnish film professionals, the film beat 35 other local films.
Based on an international bestselling novel by Sofi Oksanen, “Purge” is about two women from different eras linked by separate tales of deceit, desperation and fear.
Produced by Helsinki’s Solar Films and co-produced by Taska Film of Tallinn, the film is a trans-generational drama spanning World War II, the Soviet occupation and mafia turf wars in Estonia.
Scripted by Marko Leino and Jokinen, the cast includes Laura Birn, Liisi Tandefelt, Amanda Pilke and Peter Franzen.
The film, which is distributed locally by Nordisk Film, was released in Finland Sept. 7. It tops the charts with a $923,000 gross.
International sales are handled by TrustNordisk.
