Farewell, Frank Pierson

PiersonFormer film academy president Frank Pierson, a veritable Hollywood legend whose work ranged 50 years from  “Have Gun, Will Travel” to this year’s “Signal 30” episode of “Mad Men,” passed away today.

Pierson served two terms as president of the Writers Guild of America West from 1981-83 and from 1993-95, in addition to becoming the film academy’s prexy from 2001-05.

Part of Pierson’s legend was that his screen life actually predated his writing and producing career. The 1945 Rosalind Russell film, “Roughly Speaking,” was based on a memoir written by his mother, Louise Randall Pierson.  The trailer to the film appears below.
