‘Eat Sleep Die’ tops Spain’s Seville

'Boy Eating the Birds Food' also sweeps top plaudits

Two dramas set against the background of Europe’s crisis — “Eat Sleep Die,” from Sweden’s Gabriela Pichler, and Greek Ektoras Lygizos’ “Boy Eating the Bird’s Food” — topped the 9th Seville European Film Festival, which wrapped Saturday.

A Venice fest audience award winner, “Eat” scooped Seville’s Golden Giraldillo, while its star, Montenegro-born Nermina Lukac, took actress playing a Muslim girl in Sweden who gets fired from her factory job.

“Boy” won Silver Giraldillo and actor nod for Yannis Papadopoulos as a 20-year-old man living on his own in Athens, threatened by eviction. “Boy” earned a special mention at the Karlovy Vary fest.

As in 2008 with “Gomorra,” Italo helmer Matteo Garrone scored Seville’s special jury prize, this time with “Reality,” which won Cannes’ Grand Prix.

Austrian Ulrich Seidl’s Venice special jury winner, black comedy “Paradise: Faith,” took screenplay and shared the Eurimages European Co-production Prize with Ursula Meier’s “Sister.”

The nine-day fest once more hosted the announcement of nominations for the European Film Awards, led by six for Michael Haneke’s “Amour.”

The Seville confab screened tributes to Gallic helmer Agnes Varda and Andalusian filmmaker Gonzalo Garcia Pelayo.

In its first year under director Jose Luis Cienfuegos, Seville also hosted a Greece Focus.
