Wenders’ ‘Pina’ off to a quick start

3D docu is Germany's foreign-language Oscar submission

Germany’s foreign-lingo Oscar hopeful, 3D dance docu “Pina,” kick-started its official Stateside engagement over New Year’s weekend, with a strong four-day per-screen average of $33,476 through Jan. 2 at three locations.

Sundance Selects, which is distribbing the pic in the U.S., screened it a week before for an exclusive awards-qualifying run.

Pina” has totaled $257,797 domestically, benefiting from strong critical and audience response, as well as higher 3D ticket prices, and will remain New York-only until Selects expands the pic Jan. 13.

The film, a tribute from helmer Wim Wenders to legendary German choreographer Pina Bausch, preemed last year at the Berlin Film Festival, before screening domestically at both the Telluride and Toronto fests in September.

It’s rare for any country to select a docu as its official Oscar submission, and as a doc in 3D, “Pina” adds another unusual dimension.

Though audiences have yet to fully embrace 3D docs outside the worlds of Imax or NatGeo, Sundance Selects saw notable success last year with Werner Herzog’s “Cave of Forgotten Dreams,” grossing more than $5 million with that pic.
