Discovery sells CSS sound companies

Todd-AO, Soundelux among group acquired by Fla. firm

CSS Studios, the holding company for a small empire of sound facilities including Todd-AO and Soundelux, has been sold by Discovery Communications to a Florida-based investment company, Empire Investment Holdings.

Besides Todd-AO and Soundelux, CSS owns Sound One, Modern Music, POP Sound, Soundelux Design Music Group and The Hollywood Edge. The seven companies operate nine facilities in Hollywood and Gotham.

Empire describes itself as “focused on the acquisition and strategic management of non-core business units from public and private companies.” Empire’s chair and CEO, David Alfonso, said in a statement. “We intend to protect and enhance the company’s unique value proposition and creative leadership as the preferred destination for some of the most important filmmakers of our time.”
