Bloomberg’s Surprise Endorsement of Obama

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg looked to be giving no endorsement this election. He’s been critical of President Obama and Mitt Romney, particularly on issues like gun control, and his tepidness toward the White House has been on public display for the past four years.

But following Hurricane Sandy, Bloomberg today endorsed Obama, citing his action on climate change. The endorsement was still critical of the president for not doing more to reach across the aisle, but it was more scathing toward Romney for abandoning positions he once held. Bloomberg also cited abortion rights, marriage equality and Supreme Court appointments as reasons he’s voting for Obama.

Bloomberg was a Republican, but switched his affiliation to independent in 2007.

His endorsement was posted to Bloomberg News, the media company he founded.
