In its first expansion overseas, the International 3D Society, which is dedicated to advancing stereoscopic 3D technologies and content, has formed an Asia committee.
Panasonic R&D exec Masayuki Kozuka will serve as Asia chair; prof. Liu Ge San of the Beijing Film Academy and Dr. DooWhan Choi of KT Corp. will be vice chairs.
The committee will begin its operations in April and open sub-units in Japan, China and South Korea. Takashi Kawai, professor at Waseda University, will chair the Japan office and DooWhan Choi will head the South Korea office. The chair of the China office has yet to be determined.
“The Panasonic Group believes that it is essential for us to provide plenty of quality 3D content to our customers,” said Kozuka, adding that the company has “met with professionals in Japan, China and Korea, where 3D movies are gaining popularity, to discuss how to carry out the mission in these countries.”
International 3D Steering Committee chair and CEO of Xpand Maria Costeira added, “The Asian market is particularly well-known for how tech-savvy its consumers and exhibitors are, and consumers in the Asian market have proven to be early adopters of 3D technology.”
Specific committee activities to be discussed include inviting Hollywood experts to 3D production seminars in Asia and the creation of 3D content seminars and awards in each of the committee’s three regions.
