‘Nerdist’ heads to smallscreen

BBC America signs comedian Hardwick

BBC America will produce a backdoor pilot based on comedian Chris Hardwick’s “Nerdist” podcast. Show will air as a special later this year and, if successful, could lead to a series.

The network says it has committed to Hardwick as a talent; “Nerdist” is also the basis of an upcoming book, “The Nerdist Way,” out Nov. 1 from Penguin.

The “Nerdist” TV show will be a BBC America original.

Hardwick is also signed on to host the net’s new comedy block, Ministry of Laughs, which will feature frosh series “Friday Night Dinner” and “Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show,” as well as returning shows.

Host segments on Ministry of Laughs are produced by Hardwick’s Nerdist Industries and Comcast Entertainment Studios. The block premieres June 18 at 10 p.m..
