Canadian pubcaster sets up JV with BBC Worldwide

MONTREAL — British Columbia’s educational pubcaster Knowledge Network has bought cable channel BBC Kids from Canuck broadcaster Shaw Media and BBC Worldwide.

Knowledge Network Corp. and BBC Worldwide will set up a joint venture to run BBC Kids. The sale is subject to approval by broadcast regulator the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission.

At present, BBC Kids is a joint venture of Shaw Media and BBC Worldwide Canada. Shaw Media is the company created to house the TV assets of CanWest Global Communications that Shaw Communications acquired last year.

BBC Kids has been on air since 2001. Knowledge Network will run BBC Kids under the same terms and conditions as per the current license, providing educational programming for kids age 2 to 17.
