HBO will team with Sports Illustrated and Endgame Entertainment for a multipart documentary, “Sport in America: Our Defining Stories,” to air on HBO in 2013.

The scope of the doc is large: It’s intended to examine how sports have shaped the American character. Personal narratives from fans will play an integral role in the production.

“This is one of the most ambitious sports projects that HBO has launched, and we are delighted to collaborate with such prestigious partners, who share our passion for storytelling,” said HBO Sports exec producer Rick Bernstein.

James D. Stern and Adam Del Deo of Endgame (“Every Little Step”) will exec produce with former HBO Films topper Colin Callender, who now runs independent shingle Playground, and Time Sports Group editor Terry McDonell.

“We are proud to be working on a project that reflects sport and the human spirit, a connection that speaks directly to who we are,” McDonell said.

SI will have complimentary editorial content in its magazine as part of the related multiplatform content that it and HBO will offer.

“Sport transcends American society and speaks as a unifying language,” Stern said. “It’s one of the only aspects of modern life that crosses lines of gender, race and privilege and as such gives us a real window into who we are. When we decided to move forward with this project, we wanted to assemble a team and a venue to take it to the highest level.”
