Disney Channel has renewed “Good Luck Charlie” for a third season and announced it will premiere original movie “Good Luck Charlie, It’s Christmas!” in December.
Third-season production on “Charlie,” starring Bridgit Mendler, will begin in the winter, with the season premiere coming in early 2012. Jason Dolley, Leigh-Allyn Baker, Bradley Steven Perry, Mia Talerico and Eric Allan Kramer co-star.
In the second quarter of 2011, “Charlie” led all basic cable series among viewers 6-11 and 9-14. At the same time, more than 20% of its audience is in the 18-49 demo.
Geoff Rodkey (“Daddy Day Care”) wrote “It’s Christmas,” with Arlene Sanford directing. Phil Baker and Drew Vaupen created and exec produce the series and the telepic with Dan Staley for It’s a Laugh Prods. Debra Monk and Michael Kagan will co-star with the series cast in the movie.
Mendler, part of the new generation of Disney Channel stars along with Debby Ryan (Daily Variety, Aug. 26) was a recurring guest on cabler’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” before taking the lead in “Charlie.” She also starred in Disney Channel original film “Lemonade Mouth,” which drew 5.7 million overall viewers when it bowed April 15. “Lemonade Mouth 2” is in the works for the channel.
