‘Boardwalk’ down from last year’s debut

Three airings of Prohibition drama garner 4.5 million

“Boardwalk Empire” opened its second season down significantly from its debut a year ago.

The Steve Buscemi starrer drew 2.9 million viewers for its original 9 p.m. airing, with two more additional plays at 10 and 11 p.m. All together, “Boardwalk” drew 4.5 million viewers — down 37% from last September.

For its pilot episode in 2010, “Boardwalk” drew 4.8 million viewers for the first showing and 7.1 million over the course of the night.

Competition was tough Sunday for the pay cabler. NBC had an NFL game between the Steelers and Colts, while the MLB Network featured rivals the Red Sox and Yankees. On the broadcast side, a handful of shows had season premieres: “The Good Wife,” “Desperate Housewives,” “The Amazing Race” and the Fox animation lineup.HBO is set to debut the third season of “Hung” this weekend and the second season of “How to Make It in America.”
