Behrs bears up to be a ‘Broke’ girl

TV's Top 10: New Faces for Fall - Beth Behrs

Beth Behrs didn’t have to study for her role as a waitress in CBS’ new Monday comedy “2 Broke Girls.” Between Hollywood auditions, she had worked at Chili’s.

“I dropped a whole plate of beers on a table of 10 my first night,” Behrs recalls.

Calling it a plate instead of a tray might clue you in that waitressing wasn’t her thing.

“I’ve been doing theater since I was 4,” says Behrs, whose first-grade teacher-mom read her lines out loud so she could learn them. “I was doing theater before I could read.”

But even with American Conservatory Theater credits and a UCLA stage degree, it’s hard getting good gigs in a town forever stocked with cute young blondes. After reading for too many roles as “the bitchy cheerleader or the girl next door who’s not funny,” Behrs was stoked to find “authentic women” in “2 Broke Girls.”

The quick-witted series from comedian Whitney Cummings and “Sex and the City” showrunner Michael Patrick King casts her as a Manhattan heiress whose dad loses it all, leaving her working in a Williamsburg diner alongside a streetwise new roomie and would-be business partner played by Kat Dennings.

“What I love about it is it’s two women actually executing jokes as opposed to setting them up,” says Behrs, who as a kid in Virginia played soccer up and down the East Coast. “And I get to do the physical comedy, but I’m not playing a dumb blonde. They’re real, smart women who make mistakes and have a heart and who people can relate to.”
