Twin TV threat Garity growing fond of smallscreen

TV's Top 10: New Faces for Fall - Troy Garity

With roles in two fall dramas — NBC’s “The Playboy Club” and Starz’s “Boss” — Troy Garity says he’s doesn’t know whom to thank for being so lucky.

“This is the first year I’ve made a concentrated effort to enter TV,” Garity says. “I’m pinching myself to make sure this isn’t a dream.”

Garity is no stranger to Hollywood. Son of Jane Fonda and grandson of Henry, he even played his father, activist state Sen. Tom Hayden, in “Steal This Movie!” (2000).

“Now television is attracting so many great talents, you would be a fool not to dive in,” says Garity, who has concentrated on film work in the past.

Garity plays a mobster seeking revenge for his murdered father in “Playboy Club,” while his “Boss” character is a myopic investigative reporter going after a dirty mayor played by Kelsey Grammer.

“In tempo and tone, these two are polar opposites,” Garity says. “With ‘Playboy,’ in a 1960s tailored suit and that world around you, you almost let that act for you.”

While Garity’s childhood summers centered on his parents’ performing arts camps, he didn’t pursue acting until the late 1990s after landing a role in a college play.

“I was a little adrift until that rekindled something I had felt at those camps,” Garity says. “I’m not entering the family business, and if I try to compare myself to them I get frozen in terror. My family just happens to be extraordinarily talented people that I think of with pride and admiration while I follow my own path.”
