Joyce Doran dies at 78

Was assistant to producers including Howard Hawks

Joyce Doran, who worked as an assistant to producers in film and television including Howard Hawks, died of natural causes on Friday, Nov. 11, in Burbank, Calif. She was 78.

Doran was Hawks’ assistant on the classic 1959 Western “Rio Bravo.” On the set of that film she met her future husband, Richard Doran, a focus puller on a number of important films at Warner Bros.

Much later, she was Irwin Allen’s assistant for eight years until his death in 1991.

She was an assistant to producers or supervising producers on a number of TV shows including “Bewitched,” “The Paul Lynde Show,” “MASH,” “The Partridge Family,” “Police Woman,” “Police Story” and “Fantasy Island” and on the 1985 CBS adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland” from Irwin Allen Prods.

Before she retired in 1998, Doran worked for a time in the Warner Bros.’ accounting department.

Doran’s husband died in 1983.

She is survived by six children, including son R. Scott Doran, a leadman in the set decorating department for many films and TV shows; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
