Former CNN Mideast correspondent Jerrold Kessel died Thursday, Feb. 24, of cancer. He was 66.
Kessel reported for CNN in Jerusalem from 1990-2003. With his white beard and South African accent, he was immediately recognizable to viewers as he covered peace talks, Mideast violence and the 1995 assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
After leaving CNN, Kessel co-produced independent TV programs, wrote a book about football and wrote a sports column for an Israeli newspaper. His latest column for Israel’s Haaretz was published just last week.Kessel’s funeral will be Friday in central Israel. He is survived his wife and a son and four grandchildren.
Kessel moved to Israel as a young adult. He worked for the Jerusalem Post and Israel Radio before joining CNN.
