HBO’s New York premiere of Liz Garbus’ docu “Bobby Fischer Against the World” was, unexpectedly, a hot ticket on Tuesday night.

Sofia Coppola, Clive Davis, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Henry Kissinger and Rufus Wainwright joined more than 200 guests at HBO’s midtown theater, where the screening room was SRO.

While publicists scrambled to accommodate the growing guest list, revelers admired Harry Benson’s original photographs of the controversial chess genius, on display in the theater lobby.

“I pitched this many times,” Garbus said just before exiting the theater to head to Forty Four at Royalton for the afterparty. “The biopic is not necessarily the type of thing that HBO is known to do, but they finally took it …once they recognized the potential of the overall story.”
