O’Neill adds Laufer play

Directors set for conference

A new play by Deborah Zoe Laufer, “Leveling Up,” will take the place of “Tell Us of the Night” by “A Steady Rain” scribe Keith Huff at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s 2011 National Playwrights Conference.

“Leveling Up,” to be helmed by conference a.d. Wendy C. Goldberg, centers on a group of young vidgamers. Show will fill the July 22-23 slot previously announced for Huff’s play.

Other directors on tap for the O’Neill’s annual conference include Mark Wing-Davey, helming “Acquainted With the Night” by Keith Reddin; Off Broadway vet Lisa Petersen, onboard for “The Nether” by Jen Haley; Giovanna Sardelli, directing Anna Ziegler’s “An Incident”; and Teatro Vista a.d. Eddie Torres (“The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity”), who’s set for the latest by Quiara Alegria Hudes (“In the Heights”), “The Happiest Song Plays Last.”

The annual playwriting conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, which picked up the regional Tony last year for its new-work development activities, has helped launch plays by scribes including August Wilson, Wendy Wasserstein and John Patrick Shanley.

Conference, which runs in tandem with the O’Neill’s developmental program for musical theater, runs July 6-30.
