Actors Theater of Louisville, the Kentucky legit org that produces the annual Humana Festival of New American Plays, has tapped Les Waters as its new artistic director.

Waters, currently the associate a.d. at Berkeley Repertory Theater, replaces Marc Masterson, who earlier this year announced that he would end his 11-year tenure at ATL to take up the reins at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, Calif.

As a director, Waters is a frequent helmer of new plays, including the 2009 Broadway bow of Sarah Ruhl’s “In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play.” Off Broadway credits include Jordan Harrison’s “Doris to Darlene” and Ruhl’s “Eurydice.” Prior to his Berkeley gig, he headed the graduate directing program at UC San Diego.

Waters’ experience with new works seems likely to prove an asset as he leads the programming team of Humana, the 35-year-old springtime fest that attracts legit industry types from around the country. ATL’s activities also includes a full season of shows, with this year’s slate including upcoming stagings of “The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity” and “In the Next Room.”

Waters, who’ll lead ATL with managing director Jennifer Bielstein, will begin to shift into his new post in January and take up the position full-time in March.
