Goodspeed lines up two new musicals

'Cutman,' 'Samantha' get workshops at Connecticut theater

A musical about a Jewish boxer whose faith is tested and another about a high school girl struggling with sex, love and life will be workshopped at Goodspeed Musical’s second theater in Chester, Conn.

“Cutman: A Boxing Musical,” playing May 12-June 5, has book and direction by Jared Michael Coseglia, music and lyrics by Drew Brody. Star Cory Grant (“Jersey Boys”) also developed the story with Coseglia, former resident director at the NYU Department for Dramatic Writing, where he developed new work with emerging playwrights and screenwriters.

“The Unauthorized Autobio-graphy of Samantha Brown,” by Kait Kerrigan and Brain Lowdermilk, follows Aug. 4-28. The songwriting team made their Off Broadway bow with their adaptation of “Henry and Mudge” at the Lucille Lortel Theater in 2006.

The two original musicals will be part of a three-show series at the Norma Terris Theater.

A third new tuner slated for the fall is still to be announced.
