Katori Hall’s “The Mountaintop” opened Thursday — and helmer Kenny Leon is already headed into rehearsals for his next Broadway outing, “Stick Fly.”

But at the “Mountaintop” opening night party at Espace, he took a little time to reflect on working with the show’s two stars, Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett.

“They work so well together, but they come to a character from different directions,” he said. “Sam works from the inside out, but Angela, she needs to find the rhythm first.”

They may have different methods, but the two thesps have known each other since their Negro Ensemble days. “We were on a bus-and-truck tour together,” said Jackson, whose opening-night gift to cast and crew was one of his signature Kangol hats, embroidered with “MLK” and “The Mountaintop.”
