Douglas Carter Beane has been officially added to the creative team of the incoming Broadway musical incarnation of “Sister Act,” with the scribe set to provide additional material to the book.
Beane, whose credits include play “The Little Dog Laughed” and tuner “Xanadu,” will help spruce up the book penned by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner as the musical heads toward its April opening.
The playwright joins helmer Jerry Zaks as another addition to the creative team. Musical was originally helmed by Peter Schneider in a couple of earlier incarnations, including the West End staging that opened in 2009 and ran more than a year.
Beane’s possible involvement in the Gotham incarnation has been rumored among legiters for a few months now.
“Sister Act,” with tunes by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater, is based on the 1992 comedy that toplined Whoopi Goldberg, who produces the Broadway version with Euro legit company Stage Entertainment. Patina Miller, who starred in the show in London, and Victoria Clark lead the cast.
Tuner begins previews March 24 ahead of an April 20 opening.
