Zandvliet to helm ‘Place under the Sun’

Danish film looks at revenge following World War II

Danish helmer Martin P. Zandvliet, who achieved critical kudos for debut “Applause,” is set to direct “A Place Under the Sun.”

The film tells the story of how Denmark took revenge on captured German soldiers after the end of World War II by forcing them to clear mines without adequate training or equipment, leading to the death or maming of hundreds of them.

Zandvliet is developing the script with Nikolaj Steen.

Mikael Rieks, who produces for Cosmo Film, is in Cannes talking to potential co-production partners and investors. The pic is expected to lense next year.

“Applause,” which starred Paprika Steen as an alcoholic actress trying to get her life back on track, won the Europa Cinemas Label as best European film at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in 2009. Steen picked up thesping prizes at Karlovy Vary as well as Denmark’s Robert Awards.

The director’s next film is “Funny Man,” a biopic of actor and comedian Dirch Passer. It opens in Danish cinemas in August.
