BEIJING — Luu Trong Ninh’s “Thang Long Aspiration” is Vietnam’s entry for the foreign-language Oscar.

Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Huynh Vinh announced the pic’s selection on the website of Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party.

Pic marks the 1,000-year anniversary of the founding of the Vietnamese capital Hanoi — Thang Long is the old name for Hanoi — and focuses on a war between brothers in the Le Dynasty in the 9th century.

Judges on the selection council said the pic was “highly appreciated for its humanity, creativity, and especially its representation of the national cultural identity.”

Helmer Luu told VietNamNet he was very happy but didn’t have high hopes of making the five finalists at the Oscars.

Scripted by Charlie Nguyen and produced by Ky Nguyen Sang, “Thang Long Aspiration” won a silver prize for film and gold prizes for director and supporting actor at Vietnam’s top film awards, the Golden Kites, last year.
