UPI nabs Clavier pic in France

Comedy 'On ne choisit pas sa famille' stars Clavier and Jean Reno

Universal Pictures Intl. has picked up French rights to thesp Christian Clavier’s helming debut, “On ne choisit pas sa famille” (You do not choose your family).

UPI will co-finance and distribute the French-language comedy. Lensing is skedded to begin March 7 for a Nov. 9 release in Gaul.

Pic reteams Clavier (“La Cage aux folles”) with Jean Reno (“Leon”), and also stars standup comedienne Muriel Robin and Helena Noguerra (“Heartbreaker”). Clavier and Reno co-starred in “Les Visiteurs” and “L’Enquete corse.”

Screenplay by Clavier and Michel Delgado tells the tale of a cash-strapped car salesman who pretends to be the husband of his sister’s partner so they can adopt a Thai orphan.

Deal was spearheaded by UPI prexy of acquisitions and production Christian Grass, with UPI France managing director Stephane Huard, producers Francois Kraus and Denis Pineau-Valencienne of Les Films du Kiosque and Clavier through his Ouille Prods.

UPI exec VP of international production Clare Wise and J.J. Lousberg, director of European creative, will oversee the production for UPI.
