‘The Artist’ wins DC crix honors

Scorsese wins director; Clooney, Williams also honored

Michel Hazanavicius’s silent film “The Artist” grabbed the Washington, D.C. Area Film Critics Association’s top prize for Best Film on Monday. Martin Scorsese won Best Director for his 3D love letter to cinema, “Hugo.”

George Clooney and Michelle Williams took home leading acting kudos for their work in “The Descendants” and “My Week with Marilyn,” respectively. The supporting acting awards went to Albert Brooks for “Drive” and Octavia Spencer for “The Help.” The cast of the summer comedy hit “Bridesmaids” took home the award for best ensemble.

The victory for Hazanavicius’ homage to the talkies transition comes almost a week after the pic was announced as the top prize winner for the New York Film Critics Circle. The WAFCA also awarded the film Best Score for Ludovic Bource’s music.

Adapted and original screenplay kudos went to Alexander Payne, Nate Faxon and Jim Rash for “The Descendants” and Will Reiser for “50/50,” respectively.
