Taiwan picks ‘Seediq bale’ for Oscar race

Wei Te-sheng's epic preemed in Venice

HONG KONG — Wei Te-sheng’s epic “Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq bale” will represent Taiwan in the foreign-language film category at the 84th Academy Awards, said the Government Information Office on the self-ruled island.

Wei’s $24 million pic, the most expensive film in Taiwan’s history, portrays the Wushe Incident, a 1930 uprising by aboriginal Seediq warriors against the Japanese when Taiwan was colonized.

The 4 1/2-hour pic, which stars Taiwan’s Vivian Hsu, recently caused controversy in Venice when Taiwan objected to fest organizers designating it as a Chinese co-production and demanded a correction to reflect the film’s provenance as the self-ruled island country.
