Summit snags rights to ‘Area 52’

'Red' producers to work on comic book series

Summit Entertainment has decided to go to “Area 52,” purchasing feature rights to the Brian Haberlin’s comic book series and setting it up with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian.

Story is centered on a top-secret government storage dump, where otherworldy discoveries are stashed. When an invincible alien killing machine emerges, it faces the outcasts guards who attempt to defend themselves with an array strange weaponry.

The four-issue series was published by Image Comics in 2001, created by Haberlin Studios and written by Brian Haberlin, co-creator of Witchblade, Aria, Hellcop and Stone. JC Spink of Benderspink will exec produce the film.

Summit and di Bonaventura teamed on “Red” and its sequel, the upcoming “Man on a Ledge” and a feature centered on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig tragedy.
