Lakeshore Entertainment has tapped Stuart Beattie to write and direct “I, Frankenstein,” a contempo version of the story.

Lakeshore set up “Frankenstein” a year ago and had attached special f/x designer Patrick Tatopoulos, director of Lakeshore’s “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans,” to helm.

Project’s based on Darkstorm graphic novel created by Kevin Grevioux, who appeared in the “Underworld” pics as Raze. “I, Frankenstein” tells the story of the original monster standing between the human race and an uprising of supernatural creatures determined to overthrow the world.

Beattie wrote and made his feature directorial debut on Australian actioner “Tomorrow, When the War Began,” based on John Marsden’s novels about teenagers waging a guerrilla war against an invading foreign power.

Lakeshore toppers Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg are produicing along with Lakeshore exec Richard Wright. Grevioux, who adapted the first screenplay, will exec produce.

Beattie’s other credits include “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” “Australia” and “30 Days of Night.”

Lakeshore’s a producer on “The Lincoln Lawyer” along with Sidney Kimmel and Stone Village.
