Sony Pictures Animation has nabbed feature rights to Janet Foxley’s “Muncle Trogg.”

Project marks the first acquisition for Sony Animation’s prexy of production Michelle Raimo-Kouyate since her appointment earlier this year. Bob Osher, prexy of Sony Pictures Digital Prods., made the announcement along with Raimo-Kouyate on Thursday.

“Muncle Trogg” follows a fairytale community living in a volcano hidden from human beings. Book is published by the Chicken House in the U.K. and Australia, and will hit Stateside bookselves next spring via the Chicken House-Scholastic imprint.

“Strong characters, relatable themes, a unique world and tons of inherent comedy: As soon as I read ‘Muncle Trogg,’ I knew this would speak to the kinds of animated movies I want to make at Sony Pictures Animation,” Raimo-Kouyate said.

Jane Startz will exec produce, along with co-producer, Kane Lee, VP of Jane Startz Prods.

Next up for Sony Animation is live-action/toon hybrid “The Smurfs,” bowing July 29, followed by its slate of toons, which includes “Hotel Transylvania” and “Arthur Christmas.”
